A storm that struck mid-Missouri around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 4, created a power outage temporarily affecting Jefferson City Correctional Center (JCCC) and Algoa Correctional Center (ACC).

At Algoa Correctional Center, backup generators immediately were activated, and functions were restored. ACC is not an air-conditioned facility; housing units are kept cool with large industrial fans. The facility’s water supply was not affected.

At Jefferson City Correctional Center, an emergency generator was activated, and electrical functions were restored gradually, with the goal of reducing the strain on the power source. Air conditioning was restored by 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 5. In some parts of JCCC, cell sinks and toilets with electronic controls were temporarily disabled. Maintenance teams flushed the toilets manually, and residents were provided with bottled drinking water. Normal water functions were restored by 1 p.m. Sunday, July 5.

  • All residents of JCCC and ACC have been served all meals. Residents were served bagged meals from Saturday dinner through Monday lunch and soon will resume hot meals.
  • All residents of JCCC and ACC have drinking water. At no point were they without drinking water.
  • Both facilities have medications and health care staff available. At no point were they without medications or medical care.
  • Both facilities have key electrical functions operating, thanks to emergency generators. Some non-essential operations, such as Missouri Vocational Enterprises industries, may be affected until regular power is restored.
  • Both facilities canceled visiting for Saturday afternoon and Sunday, July 4 and 5. Visiting will resume July 10.

Standard power is expected to be restored in the area Tuesday, July 7.
